How to find a percent of a number

“Percent” means “out of 100,” so a percentage is really a fraction with denominator 100. To find a percent of a number, turn the percent into a decimal (or fraction) and multiply.

  1. Change the percent to a decimal (divide by 100): 20% → 0.20.
  2. Multiply by the number: 0.20 × 80.
  3. For friendly percents, use shortcuts: 10% is just one-tenth, 50% is half, 25% is a quarter.

Worked examples

Using a shortcut20% of 80 — 10% of 80 is 8, so 20% is double that: 16.
Half and quarter25% of 60 — a quarter of 60 is 60 ÷ 4 = 15.

Tips & common mistakes

The friendly percents are worth memorising as shortcuts: 10% (move the decimal one place), 50% (halve it), 25% (quarter it). Build trickier ones from these — 30% is three lots of 10%. Type your answer with the decimal-point key if it isn’t whole.

  • Forgetting to divide the percent by 100 before multiplying (using 20 instead of 0.20).
  • Mixing up the percent and the number — you take the percent of the number.
  • Slipping a decimal place — 10% of 80 is 8, not 0.8 or 80.

Frequently asked questions

How do you find a percent of a number?

Turn the percent into a decimal by dividing by 100, then multiply by the number. 20% of 80 = 0.20 × 80 = 16.

What’s the quickest way to find 10%?

Move the decimal point one place left — 10% of 80 is 8. From there, 20% is double, 5% is half, 30% is triple, and so on.

How do I find 25% or 50%?

50% is half the number; 25% is a quarter (divide by 4). These shortcuts are faster than converting to a decimal.

What grade is this?

Finding a percent of a number is a grade 6–7 skill, central to ratios and real-world math.

How do I type a decimal answer?

Use the number keys and the decimal-point key, e.g. 4 . 5.
