How to find a percent of a number
“Percent” means “out of 100,” so a percentage is really a fraction with denominator 100. To find a percent of a number, turn the percent into a decimal (or fraction) and multiply.
- Change the percent to a decimal (divide by 100): 20% → 0.20.
- Multiply by the number: 0.20 × 80.
- For friendly percents, use shortcuts: 10% is just one-tenth, 50% is half, 25% is a quarter.
Worked examples
Tips & common mistakes
The friendly percents are worth memorising as shortcuts: 10% (move the decimal one place), 50% (halve it), 25% (quarter it). Build trickier ones from these — 30% is three lots of 10%. Type your answer with the decimal-point key if it isn’t whole.
- Forgetting to divide the percent by 100 before multiplying (using 20 instead of 0.20).
- Mixing up the percent and the number — you take the percent of the number.
- Slipping a decimal place — 10% of 80 is 8, not 0.8 or 80.
Frequently asked questions
How do you find a percent of a number?
