Working with negative numbers
Integers are the whole numbers plus their negatives: … −3, −2, −1, 0, 1, 2, 3 … The rules feel strange at first, but they come down to a few patterns.
- Adding: same signs — add and keep the sign; different signs — subtract and take the sign of the larger.
- Subtracting: add the opposite — 5 − (−3) becomes 5 + 3.
- Multiplying/dividing: same signs give a positive, different signs give a negative.
Worked examples
Different signs−7 + 3: subtract 7 − 3 = 4, take the sign of the larger (−7), so the answer is −4.
Two negatives−6 × −4: different—no, same signs, so the answer is positive: 24.

Tips & common mistakes
- Forgetting that subtracting a negative is the same as adding.
- Getting the sign wrong on a product — two negatives make a positive.
- Adding the numbers but losing track of which sign wins.

What are integers?
The whole numbers together with their negatives and zero: … −2, −1, 0, 1, 2 …
What’s the rule for multiplying negatives?
Same signs give a positive result, different signs give a negative. So −3 × −4 = 12 but −3 × 4 = −12.
How do you subtract a negative number?
Add its opposite — 8 − (−5) is the same as 8 + 5 = 13.
What grade are integers taught in?
Operations with integers are a grade 6–7 skill (6.NS and 7.NS).
