How to teach Class 7 Maths Part 2 Chapter 2, Operations with Integers, at home

Multiplying and dividing integers, taught with things you already have at home: a 20-minute activity, a game for the week, a 5-day plan and the mistakes to watch for.

(−3) × (−4) = 12(−12) ÷ 3 = −4same signs +, different signs −

NCERT Class 7 Maths Part 2 Chapter 2 Operations with Integers: what it teaches

Building on adding and subtracting integers, your child multiplies and divides them, works out the sign rules from patterns, and uses properties like commutativity and distributivity.

Why it matters later. Integer operations are essential in algebra, coordinates and equations.

See it: this chapter in pictures

3 × (−1) = −3(−3) × (−1) = 3follow the pattern
Patterns explain why negative × negative is positive.
(−4) × 27 + (−4) × 3= (−4) × 30= −120
Properties make hard sums easy.
(−2) × (−3) × (−4)three negatives → negative= −24
Count the negatives.

You need

  • positive and negative tokens
  • a number line
  • a calculator for checking

Tonight’s 20 minutes

  1. Pattern: 3 × 2 = 6, 3 × 1 = 3, 3 × 0 = 0, 3 × (−1) = ? Continue the pattern.
  2. Then (−3) × 2, (−3) × 1, (−3) × 0, (−3) × (−1) = ?
  3. Divide: (−12) ÷ 3 and (−12) ÷ (−3).
  4. Use distributivity: (−4) × 27 + (−4) × 3 = (−4) × 30.

Words to use

  • integer
  • product
  • quotient
  • sign rule
  • distributive
  • commutative

Watch for

  • Thinking negative × negative is negative. Continue the pattern: the products go up by 3 each time: 3.
  • Losing signs in long calculations. Decide the sign first, then the number.

What it sounds like at home

A short example of the conversation. Your words will differ; the questions are what matter.

You(−3) × (−1)? Follow the pattern.

Your child−9, −6, −3, 0, 3. So 3!

A game for this week: Sign race

  1. Make cards with integers from −10 to 10.
  2. Draw two and an operation card (× or ÷).
  3. First to give the correct answer keeps the cards.
  4. Most cards wins.

A 5-day plan, 20 minutes a day

  1. Day 1Pattern for positive × negative.
  2. Day 2Pattern for negative × negative.
  3. Day 3Division rules.
  4. Day 4Distributive shortcuts.
  5. Day 5Sign race game.

Everyday moments to practise

  • Temperature drops per hour.
  • Bank withdrawals.
  • Floors below ground.
  • Profit and loss.

Quick check

Ask these at the end of the week. Tap to see the answer.

(−3) × (−4)?

12.

(−12) ÷ 3?

−4.

(−4) × 27 + (−4) × 3?

−120.

Ready for the next chapter when your child…

  • Multiplies and divides integers.
  • Explains the sign rules.
  • Uses properties to simplify.

Activities, wording and illustrations are Mathify Kids’ own, following the topics of NCERT’s Ganita Prakash (Class 7). See the full Class 7 parent guide for every chapter.

Questions parents ask

Why is negative × negative positive?

Patterns show products increase as the multiplier decreases past zero.

Is division of integers commutative?

No: (−12) ÷ 3 ≠ 3 ÷ (−12).

What is the sign of (−2) × (−3) × (−4)?

Negative: an odd number of negatives.
