How to teach Class 7 Maths Chapter 1, Large Numbers Around Us, at home
Lakhs, crores and estimating big numbers, taught with things you already have at home: a 20-minute activity, a game for the week, a 5-day plan and the mistakes to watch for.
NCERT Class 7 Maths Chapter 1 Large Numbers Around Us: what it teaches
Your child reads and writes numbers in lakhs and crores, compares the Indian and international systems, and builds a feel for size: how long is a lakh seconds, how tall is a crore coins? Estimation and rounding make big numbers usable.
Why it matters later. Large numbers and estimation are needed for science, geography and data in every later class.

You need
- a newspaper or news website
- a calculator
- a stopwatch
Tonight’s 20 minutes
- Write 3,05,40,000 and read it aloud. Then write it in the international system (30,540,000).
- Estimate how many days make a lakh seconds, then check with a calculator (about 1.16 days).
- Pick three big numbers from the news and round each to the nearest lakh.
- Ask: roughly how many people live in your state? Find the real figure and compare.
Words to use
- lakh
- crore
- million
- billion
- estimate
- round off
- place value
Watch for
- Mixing lakh and million commas. Write both systems side by side: 10,00,000 = 1,000,000.
- Estimates that are wildly off. Anchor to something known: a lakh is 100 thousand.
