How to teach Class 7 Maths Part 2 Chapter 4, Another Peek Beyond the Point, at home

Multiplying and dividing decimals, taught with things you already have at home: a 20-minute activity, a game for the week, a 5-day plan and the mistakes to watch for.

3.8 × 4.1≈ 4 × 4 = 16= 15.58

NCERT Class 7 Maths Part 2 Chapter 4 Another Peek Beyond the Point: what it teaches

Your child multiplies and divides decimals, by 10, 100 and 1000 and by other decimals, estimates first to place the decimal point, and uses decimals in money and measurement.

Why it matters later. Decimal operations are used in percentages, money and science measurements.

2.5 × 10 = 252.5 × 100 = 250point moves right
Each × 10 moves the point one place.
2.5 kg × ₹48.60≈ 2.5 × 50 = 125= ₹121.50
Estimate, then calculate.
7.5 ÷ 0.5= 75 ÷ 5= 15
Make the divisor a whole number.

You need

  • price tags
  • a calculator for checking
  • squared paper for area models

Tonight’s 20 minutes

  1. Multiply 2.5 × 10, × 100, × 1000. What happens to the point?
  2. Estimate 3.8 × 4.1 ≈ 16, then calculate (15.58).
  3. Cost of 2.5 kg rice at ₹48.60 per kg.
  4. Divide 7.5 ÷ 0.5 by making the divisor whole: 75 ÷ 5.

Words to use

  • decimal point
  • estimate
  • product
  • quotient
  • place value

Watch for

  • Misplacing the decimal point. Estimate first: 3.8 × 4.1 is about 16, so 155.8 can’t be right.
  • Dividing by a decimal directly. Multiply both numbers by 10 or 100 to make the divisor whole.

What it sounds like at home

A short example of the conversation. Your words will differ; the questions are what matter.

You2.5 kg at ₹48.60. About how much?

Your childAbout 2.5 × 50 = 125. Exact: ₹121.50.

A game for this week: Estimate first

  1. Write decimal multiplication cards.
  2. Players estimate before calculating.
  3. Then calculate.
  4. Score for estimates within 10%.

A 5-day plan, 20 minutes a day

  1. Day 1×10, 100, 1000.
  2. Day 2Estimate products.
  3. Day 3Money problems.
  4. Day 4Divide by decimals.
  5. Day 5Estimate first game.

Everyday moments to practise

  • Shopping bills by weight.
  • Fuel cost per litre.
  • Unit prices.
  • Science measurements.

Ready for the next chapter when your child…

  • Multiplies decimals accurately.
  • Divides by decimals.
  • Places decimal points using estimation.

Questions parents ask

How do I multiply decimals?

Multiply as whole numbers, then place the point using the total decimal places.

How do I divide by 0.5?

Multiply both by 10: 7.5 ÷ 0.5 = 75 ÷ 5.

Why estimate?

To place the decimal point sensibly.
