How to solve an equation
Solving an equation means finding the value of x that makes it true. The key idea: do the same thing to both sides to keep it balanced, working backwards through the operations.
- One step: undo what’s done to x — if 5 is added, subtract 5 from both sides.
- Multiplication: if x is multiplied by 3, divide both sides by 3.
- Two steps: undo addition/subtraction first, then multiplication/division.
