How ratios and proportions work
A ratio compares two quantities; a proportion says two ratios are equal. Scaling both parts by the same factor keeps a ratio the same.
- Equivalent ratios: multiply both parts by the same number — 2 : 3 = 4 : 6 = 8 : 12.
- Unit rate: how much for one — divide to find the per-unit amount.
- Solving a proportion: find the scale factor between the known parts and apply it.
Worked examples
Equivalent ratio2 : 3 = 8 : ? — the left part ×4 went from 2 to 8, so the right part is 3 × 4 = 12.
Unit rate60 for 5 means 60 ÷ 5 = 12 for one.

Tips & common mistakes
- Scaling only one part of the ratio instead of both.
- Confusing the ratio order — 2 : 3 is not the same as 3 : 2.
- Forgetting to divide all the way down to one when finding a unit rate.
