How to teach Class 7 Maths Part 2 Chapter 5, Connecting the Dots, at home

Data: mean, median and graphs, taught with things you already have at home: a 20-minute activity, a game for the week, a 5-day plan and the mistakes to watch for.

NCERT Class 7 Maths Part 2 Chapter 5 Connecting the Dots: what it teaches

Your child learns to summarise data with a typical value: the mean (average) and the median (middle value), compares when each is useful, and reads and draws line and bar graphs.

Why it matters later. Mean and median lead to statistics in Classes 8–10.

See it: this chapter in pictures

4, 6, 8sum 18 ÷ 3mean = 6
Add all, divide by how many.
3, 9, 5, 7, 1order: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9median = 5
Order first, then find the middle.
2, 3, 4, 5, 36mean = 10 median = 4median resists outliers
Pick the average that fits the data.

You need

  • a week of temperature readings
  • squared paper
  • a calculator

Tonight’s 20 minutes

  1. Record the daily temperature for a week. Find the mean.
  2. Order the values and find the median.
  3. Add one extreme value. Which changes more, mean or median?
  4. Draw a line graph of the week’s temperatures.

Words to use

  • data
  • mean
  • median
  • average
  • line graph
  • outlier

Watch for

  • Forgetting to order data before finding the median. Always sort first.
  • Mean of an even number of values wrong because of division. Add all, divide by how many values.

What it sounds like at home

A short example of the conversation. Your words will differ; the questions are what matter.

YouScores 2, 3, 4, 5, 36. Mean or median fairer?

Your childMedian 4; the mean 10 is pulled up by 36.

A game for this week: Class average

  1. Collect the heights of family members.
  2. Find the mean and median.
  3. Add a guest’s height.
  4. Discuss which average changed more.

A 5-day plan, 20 minutes a day

  1. Day 1Collect data.
  2. Day 2Mean.
  3. Day 3Median.
  4. Day 4Outliers.
  5. Day 5Line graph.

Everyday moments to practise

  • Average marks.
  • Cricket averages.
  • Weather reports.
  • Monthly bills.

Quick check

Ask these at the end of the week. Tap to see the answer.

Mean of 4, 6, 8?

6.

Median of 3, 9, 5, 7, 1?

5.

Which is less affected by one very large value?

The median.

Ready for the next chapter when your child…

  • Finds mean and median.
  • Chooses the better average.
  • Draws and reads line graphs.

Activities, wording and illustrations are Mathify Kids’ own, following the topics of NCERT’s Ganita Prakash (Class 7). See the full Class 7 parent guide for every chapter.

Questions parents ask

What is the mean?

The sum of values divided by the number of values.

What is the median?

The middle value when data is in order.

When is the median better?

When there are extreme values.
