How to teach Class 7 Maths Chapter 3, A Peek Beyond the Point, at home
Decimals: tenths, hundredths and comparing, taught with things you already have at home: a 20-minute activity, a game for the week, a 5-day plan and the mistakes to watch for.
NCERT Class 7 Maths Chapter 3 A Peek Beyond the Point: what it teaches
Measuring a toy part smaller than a centimetre needs units smaller than one: tenths and hundredths. Your child writes decimals, places them on a number line, compares and orders them, adds and subtracts decimals, and converts units like 1.25 m = 125 cm.
Why it matters later. Decimals are used in money, measurement and science; Class 7 Part 2 continues with multiplying and dividing decimals.

You need
- a ruler with mm marks
- a measuring tape
- price tags or bills with paise
Tonight’s 20 minutes
- Measure a pencil in cm and mm; write it as a decimal: 12.7 cm.
- Mark 0.3, 0.35 and 0.5 on a number line from 0 to 1.
- Compare 0.6 and 0.45. Which is bigger? Why?
- Add 2.75 + 1.4 by lining up decimal points.
Words to use
- decimal point
- tenths
- hundredths
- place value
- compare
- convert
Watch for
- Thinking 0.45 > 0.6 because 45 > 6. Write 0.6 as 0.60: 60 hundredths beats 45.
- Misaligned decimal points when adding. Line up the points; fill gaps with zeros.
What it sounds like at home
A short example of the conversation. Your words will differ; the questions are what matter.
YouWhich is bigger, 0.6 or 0.45?
Your child0.45… no, 0.60 is bigger!
A game for this week: Decimal line-up
- Write 8 decimal cards (0.5, 0.05, 0.55, 1.2…).
- Shuffle and deal.
- Players place cards in order on a number line.
- Fastest correct order wins.
A 5-day plan, 20 minutes a day
- Day 1Measure in cm and mm.
- Day 2Decimals on the number line.
- Day 3Compare and order decimals.
- Day 4Add and subtract decimals.
- Day 5Decimal line-up game.
Everyday moments to practise
- Prices like ₹45.50.
