How to teach Class 7 Maths Chapter 2, Arithmetic Expressions, at home
Expressions, brackets and order of operations, taught with things you already have at home: a 20-minute activity, a game for the week, a 5-day plan and the mistakes to watch for.
NCERT Class 7 Maths Chapter 2 Arithmetic Expressions: what it teaches
Expressions like 13 + 2 × 5 can be read in different ways unless we agree on rules. Your child writes expressions for situations, uses brackets, follows the order of operations, and compares expressions without fully calculating them.
Why it matters later. Expressions and order of operations are the base of algebra in Class 7 and 8.

You need
- paper and pencil
- number cards
- a simple shop bill
Tonight’s 20 minutes
- Write an expression for a bill: 3 notebooks at ₹25 and 2 pens at ₹10.
- Compare 30 + 4 × 5 and (30 + 4) × 5. Why do they differ?
- Without calculating fully, decide which is bigger: 57 + 36 or 56 + 38.
- Use cards 2, 3, 5 and +, ×, ( ) to make the biggest number possible.
Words to use
- expression
- term
- brackets
- order of operations
- value
- compare
Watch for
- Working strictly left to right. Multiply and divide before adding and subtracting, unless brackets say otherwise.
- Dropping brackets when copying. Circle brackets first and solve inside them.
What it sounds like at home
A short example of the conversation. Your words will differ; the questions are what matter.
You30 + 4 × 5. What first?
Your childMultiply: 20, then 50.
A game for this week: Target number
- Draw four digit cards and pick a target like 24.
- Use +, −, ×, ÷ and brackets to hit it.
- Each correct expression scores.
- Share different solutions.
A 5-day plan, 20 minutes a day
- Day 1Expressions for a bill.
- Day 2Brackets change values.
- Day 3Compare without calculating.
- Day 4Terms of an expression.
- Day 5Target number game.
Everyday moments to practise
- Shop bills.
- Recipe scaling.
- Taxi fares: fixed + per km.
- Mobile data plans.
Quick check
Ask these at the end of the week. Tap to see the answer.
Value of 30 + 4 × 5?
50.
Value of (30 + 4) × 5?
170.
Which is bigger: 57 + 36 or 56 + 38?
56 + 38 (94 vs 93).
Ready for the next chapter when your child…
- Writes expressions for situations.
- Uses brackets and order of operations correctly.
- Compares expressions by reasoning.
Activities, wording and illustrations are Mathify Kids’ own, following the topics of NCERT’s Ganita Prakash (Class 7). See the full Class 7 parent guide for every chapter.
Questions parents ask
What is the order of operations?
Brackets first, then multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction.
What is a term?
Parts of an expression joined by + or −.
Why compare without calculating?
It builds reasoning, like seeing 56 + 38 is 1 less then 2 more than 57 + 36.
