How column addition scales up

Once two- and three-digit addition make sense, bigger numbers add nothing new — you just have more columns, and sometimes more than two numbers stacked up. The method is identical: line everything up by place value and work right to left, carrying as you go.

  1. Stack the numbers so their place values line up (ones under ones).
  2. Add each column from the right, carrying any ten into the next column.
  3. With several numbers, a column can carry more than one ten — that is fine, just carry the full amount.
  4. Write the total.

Large numbers3,482 + 1,759 — working right to left with carries gives 5,241.
Adding several numbers7 + 8 + 5 + 3 — add in order: 7 + 8 = 15, + 5 = 20, + 3 = 23.

Tips & common mistakes

Neat columns are everything here. When you add several numbers, a single column can total more than 19, so you may carry a 2 or more — don’t be thrown by it. Estimate to catch slips: 3,482 + 1,759 ≈ 3,500 + 1,800 = 5,300, close to 5,241.

  • Columns drifting out of line with long numbers.
  • Carrying only 1 when a column of several numbers needs a bigger carry.
  • Losing your place when adding a tall stack — mark off each number as you add it.

What grade is multi-digit addition?

It is a grade 4 skill, building on 3-digit addition.

How is adding three or four numbers different?

Same columns — but a single column can total more than 19, so you may carry 2 or more into the next column.

Does the method change for very large numbers?

No — more columns, same steps. Alignment and carrying are all that matter.

How do we check a long sum?

Estimate by rounding each number, or re-add the columns from the bottom up as a second pass.

Any trick for adding a tall list?

Look for pairs that make ten (like 7 + 3) and add those first — it speeds things up and reduces errors.
