3-digit addition: a worked example (358 + 267)

358 + 267 ───── 625

  1. Ones: 8 + 7 = 15. Write 5, carry 1 ten.
  2. Tens: 5 + 6 + 1 = 12. Write 2, carry 1 hundred.
  3. Hundreds: 3 + 2 + 1 = 6. The answer is 625.

How to use it at home and in class

At home

Before adding, ask your child to estimate: 358 + 267 is about 400 + 300 = 700, so 625 is reasonable. Ten problems a day works better than a whole sheet at once. Mark them together with the answer key, then ask your child to explain one they got wrong: finding the mistake themselves is where the learning happens.

In class

Use the first row as a warm-up, a full page for independent practice, or five questions as an exit ticket. For a retake or a second group, make a new version with the test maker so every child gets different numbers.
