Number bonds: a worked example (Find the missing part: whole 10, part 7)
- The whole is 10 and one part is 7.
- Ask: 7 and what make 10?
- The missing part is 3, because 7 + 3 = 10.
How to use it at home and in class
At home
Use real objects first: split 10 buttons into two groups in as many ways as your child can find. Ten problems a day works better than a whole sheet at once. Mark them together with the answer key, then ask your child to explain one they got wrong: finding the mistake themselves is where the learning happens.
In class
Use the first row as a warm-up, a full page for independent practice, or five questions as an exit ticket. For a retake or a second group, make a new version with the test maker so every child gets different numbers.
Mistakes to watch for
- Adding the whole and the part (10 + 7) instead of finding what is missing.
- Treating number bonds as a separate topic rather than as addition and subtraction.
What to practice before and after number bonds
- Before: 3-digit subtraction. If this sheet is a struggle, go back a step.
- Learn it first: the number bonds lesson and the addition chart.
