2-digit by 1-digit multiplication: a worked example (34 × 6)
34 × 6 ──── 204
- Ones: 4 × 6 = 24. Write 4, carry 2 tens.
- Tens: 3 × 6 = 18, plus the carried 2 = 20.
- Write 20. The answer is 204.
How to use it at home and in class
At home
Show the same problem as partial products (30 × 6 = 180, 4 × 6 = 24, total 204) so the carrying makes sense. Ten problems a day works better than a whole sheet at once. Mark them together with the answer key, then ask your child to explain one they got wrong: finding the mistake themselves is where the learning happens.
In class
Use the first row as a warm-up, a full page for independent practice, or five questions as an exit ticket. For a retake or a second group, make a new version with the test maker so every child gets different numbers.
Mistakes to watch for
- Adding the carried digit before multiplying instead of after.
- Forgetting that the 3 in 34 means 30.
