Multi-digit multiplication: a worked example (324 × 23)
324 × 23 ─────── 972 + 6480 ─────── 7452
- Multiply by 3: 324 × 3 = 972.
- Multiply by 20: write a 0, then 324 × 2 = 648, giving 6480.
- Add: 972 + 6480 = 7452.
How to use it at home and in class
At home
Use squared paper so every digit sits in its own column. Ten problems a day works better than a whole sheet at once. Mark them together with the answer key, then ask your child to explain one they got wrong: finding the mistake themselves is where the learning happens.
In class
Use the first row as a warm-up, a full page for independent practice, or five questions as an exit ticket. For a retake or a second group, make a new version with the test maker so every child gets different numbers.
Mistakes to watch for
- Lining up the rows wrong so the digits add in the wrong columns.
- Forgetting to add carried digits partway through a row.
What to practice before and after multi-digit multiplication
- Before: 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication. If this sheet is a struggle, go back a step.
- After: multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000, once this one is mostly right.
- Learn it first: the multi-digit multiplication lesson and the multiplication chart.
