Multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000: a worked example (56 × 100 and 3,250 ÷ 1,000)
- 56 × 100: 100 has two zeros, so each digit moves two places left. 56 becomes 5,600.
- 3,250 ÷ 1,000: 1,000 has three zeros, so each digit moves three places right. 3,250 becomes 3.25.
- Multiplying moves digits left; dividing moves them right.
How to use it at home and in class
At home
Use a place value chart and physically slide the digits to show the move. Ten problems a day works better than a whole sheet at once. Mark them together with the answer key, then ask your child to explain one they got wrong: finding the mistake themselves is where the learning happens.
In class
Use the first row as a warm-up, a full page for independent practice, or five questions as an exit ticket. For a retake or a second group, make a new version with the test maker so every child gets different numbers.
Mistakes to watch for
- Adding or removing zeros with decimals, so 3.25 × 10 becomes 3.250.
- Moving the digits the wrong way when dividing.
What to practice before and after multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000
- Before: multi-digit multiplication. If this sheet is a struggle, go back a step.
- Learn it first: the multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000 lesson and the place value chart.
