How to teach Class 5 Maths Chapter 6, The Dairy Farm, at home
Multiplication strategies and larger products, taught with things you already have at home: a 10-minute activity, a game for the week, a 5-day plan and the mistakes to watch for.
NCERT Class 5 Maths Chapter 6 The Dairy Farm: what it teaches
Milk pouches, cows and crates lead to bigger multiplication. Your child uses arrays, splitting numbers, doubling and halving, and the standard method to multiply two-digit and three-digit numbers, and estimates products.
Why it matters later. Multiplication strategies prepare for long multiplication, area and algebra.

You need
- squared paper
- counters or buttons
- a notebook for working
Tonight’s 10 minutes
- Arrange 60 pouches in different arrays: 30 × 2, 20 × 3, 12 × 5, 10 × 6.
- Multiply 24 × 13 by splitting: 24 × 10 + 24 × 3.
- Try doubling and halving: 25 × 16 = 50 × 8 = 100 × 4.
- Estimate 48 × 21 as 50 × 20 before working it out.
Words to use
- array
- product
- split
- double and halve
- estimate
- factor
Watch for
- Forgetting the zero when multiplying by the tens digit. Write the tens part as its own line: 24 × 10 = 240.
- Adding partial products wrongly. Line up places and label each line (× ones, × tens).

A game for this week: Closest to 100
- Give digits 2, 5 and 3.
- Arrange them as a two-digit × one-digit sum.
- Closest product to 100 wins.
- Repeat with new digits and targets.
A 5-day plan, 10 minutes a day
- Day 1Arrays for 60.
- Day 2Splitting 24 × 13.
- Day 3Doubling and halving.
- Day 4Estimate products.
- Day 5Closest to 100 game.
Everyday moments to practise
- Milk packets per week.
- Tickets for a class trip.
- Tiles for a floor.
- Seats in rows at a hall.

Questions parents ask
How is multiplication taught in Class 5?
With arrays, splitting, doubling and halving, and the standard method.
What is doubling and halving?
Double one number and halve the other: the product stays the same.
Why estimate products?
To check if the answer is sensible.
