How to teach Class 5 Maths Chapter 9, Coconut Farm, at home
Division facts and long division, taught with things you already have at home: a 10-minute activity, a game for the week, a 5-day plan and the mistakes to watch for.
NCERT Class 5 Maths Chapter 9 Coconut Farm: what it teaches
An array of 35 coconuts shows 5 × 7 = 35, and so 35 ÷ 7 = 5 and 35 ÷ 5 = 7. Your child connects multiplication and division, divides larger numbers, deals with remainders, and checks with dividend = divisor × quotient + remainder.
Why it matters later. Division and remainders are needed for fractions, ratios and averages later.

You need
- counters or beans
- small bowls
- squared paper
Tonight’s 10 minutes
- Make a 5 by 7 array. Write one multiplication and two division facts.
- Share 84 beans into 4 bowls: first the tens, then the ones.
- Divide 125 by 6 and find the remainder.
- Check: 6 × 20 + 5 = 125.
Words to use
- dividend
- divisor
- quotient
- remainder
- division fact
- check
Watch for
- Remainder bigger than the divisor. If the remainder is bigger, one more fits: increase the quotient.
- Losing place value in long division. Divide tens first, then bring down the ones.
What it sounds like at home
A short example of the conversation. Your words will differ; the questions are what matter.
You125 coconuts in bags of 6. How many bags?
Your child6 × 20 = 120, so 20 bags.
YouAny left?
Your child5.
YouCheck it.
Your child6 × 20 + 5 = 125.
A game for this week: Division bingo
- Make a bingo grid of numbers 2 to 12.
- Call a division like 72 ÷ 8.
- Players cross the answer if they have it.
- First full row wins.
A 5-day plan, 10 minutes a day
- Day 1Arrays: one × fact, two ÷ facts.
- Day 2Share tens then ones.
- Day 3Divide with remainders.
- Day 4Check with dividend = divisor × quotient + remainder.
- Day 5Division bingo.
Everyday moments to practise
- Sharing money equally.
- Packing items in boxes.
- Seats per bus.
- Pages read per day.
Quick check
Ask these at the end of the week. Tap to see the answer.
Two division facts from 6 × 8 = 48?
48 ÷ 6 = 8 and 48 ÷ 8 = 6.
84 ÷ 4?
21.
125 ÷ 6?
20 remainder 5.
Ready for the next chapter when your child…
- Writes division facts from multiplication.
- Divides three-digit numbers by one-digit numbers.
- Checks division answers.

Questions parents ask
What are dividend, divisor and quotient?
In 35 ÷ 7 = 5, 35 is the dividend, 7 the divisor, 5 the quotient.
How do I check a division?
Divisor × quotient + remainder should equal the dividend.
Can the remainder be bigger than the divisor?
No; if it is, divide once more.
