NCERT Class 5 Maths Chapter 3 Angles as Turns: what it teaches

An angle is a turn. Your child turns their body a full, half or quarter turn, spots turns in clocks and doors, learns that a quarter turn makes a right angle, and compares angles as more or less than a right angle.

Why it matters later. Turns and right angles lead to measuring angles in degrees in Class 6.

Compare angles with a quarter turn.

You need

  • open floor space
  • a clock with hands
  • two paper strips joined with a pin

Tonight’s 10 minutes

  1. Play Statue: turn and freeze. Did you turn a full, half or quarter turn?
  2. Watch the minute hand: how far does it turn in 15, 30 and 60 minutes?
  3. Open the paper-strip angle to a quarter turn. Find three right angles in the room.
  4. Make angles smaller and bigger than a right angle and name them.

Words to use

  • full turn
  • half turn
  • quarter turn
  • right angle
  • clockwise
  • anticlockwise
  • angle

Watch for

  • Mixing up clockwise and anticlockwise. Stand next to a clock face and turn the same way the hands go.
  • Thinking a half turn means facing sideways. A half turn makes you face the opposite way.
