NCERT Class 5 Maths Chapter 15 Data Through Pictures: what it teaches

Your child collects data like hours of TV or stock in a shop, organises it in tables, draws pictographs with a key (one picture = 5) and bar graphs, and answers questions from them.

Why it matters later. Pictographs and bar graphs lead to double bar graphs, pie charts and statistics later.

Bars make comparisons quick.

You need

  • squared paper
  • coloured pencils
  • a question to ask 10 or more people

Tonight’s 10 minutes

  1. Ask: “How many hours of screen time yesterday?” Record in a table.
  2. Draw a pictograph with a key: one symbol = 2 children.
  3. Draw a bar graph of the same data.
  4. Ask three questions from the graph: most, least, difference.

Words to use

  • data
  • table
  • pictograph
  • key
  • bar graph
  • scale
  • most
  • least

Watch for

  • Ignoring the key in a pictograph. Read the key first: one symbol may mean 5, not 1.
  • Uneven scales on bar graphs. Mark equal steps on the axis: 0, 2, 4, 6…

What it sounds like at home

A short example of the conversation. Your words will differ; the questions are what matter.

YouOne symbol equals 5 children. Four symbols?

Your child20.

YouWhich bar is tallest?

Your child1 hour of TV.

YouHow many more than 2 hours?

Your child5 more.

A game for this week: Family survey report

  1. Pick a question with one answer each.
  2. Collect answers from at least 10 people.
  3. Draw a pictograph with a key and a bar graph.
  4. Present three facts to the family.

A 5-day plan, 10 minutes a day

  1. Day 1Collect data in a table.
  2. Day 2Pictograph with a key.
  3. Day 3Bar graph.
  4. Day 4Ask questions from graphs.
  5. Day 5Family survey report.

Everyday moments to practise

  • Cricket score graphs.
  • Weather charts.
  • Shop stock lists.
  • Class attendance.

Quick check

Ask these at the end of the week. Tap to see the answer.

Key: one symbol = 5. Four symbols mean?

Which bar shows the most?

The tallest bar.

If 12 watch 1 hour and 7 watch 2 hours, how many more watch 1 hour?

5.

Ready for the next chapter when your child…

  • Makes tables from data.
  • Draws pictographs with a key.
  • Draws and reads bar graphs.
