How to teach Class 5 Maths Chapter 8, Weight and Capacity, at home
Reading scales; kg, g, L and ml, taught with things you already have at home: a 10-minute activity, a game for the week, a 5-day plan and the mistakes to watch for.
NCERT Class 5 Maths Chapter 8 Weight and Capacity: what it teaches
Your child checks whether recorded weights make sense, reads different weighing scales, converts between kg and g and between litres and ml, and solves shopping and cooking problems.
Why it matters later. Reading scales and converting units is essential in science labs and everyday life.

You need
- a kitchen scale
- packets with weights printed
- a measuring jug
- bottles of 200 ml, 500 ml and 1 L
Tonight’s 10 minutes
- Is it sensible? An almirah weighs 40 g? A bucket 1 kg 800 g? Tick or cross each.
- Read the kitchen scale for three items. Write in kg and g.
- Convert: 2 kg 350 g = 2350 g; 1 L 250 ml = 1250 ml.
- Plan lemonade for 8 glasses of 200 ml each. How many litres?
