How to teach Class 4 Maths Chapter 9, Equal Groups, at home

Multiples, multiplication and division, taught with things you already have at home: a 10-minute activity, a game for the week, a 5-day plan and the mistakes to watch for.

1224common multiples of 3 and 4

NCERT Class 4 Maths Chapter 9 Equal Groups: what it teaches

Animals jumping 3, 4, 6 or 8 steps at a time land on multiples. Your child finds multiples, notices numbers that are multiples of two numbers, and uses equal groups to multiply and divide, including sharing with a remainder.

Why it matters later. Multiples lead to factors, LCM and fractions in Class 5 and 6; equal groups underlie all division.

Sharing with a remainder.

You need

  • chalk for a number line on the floor
  • counters or beans
  • small bowls

Tonight’s 10 minutes

  1. Chalk a number line to 60. Jump in 3s, then in 4s. Which numbers get both marks?
  2. Write the multiples of 6 to 60. Which are also multiples of 3?
  3. Share 23 beans into 4 bowls equally. How many each, and how many left over?
  4. Make a story: 48 children in rows of 6. How many rows?

Words to use

  • multiple
  • common multiple
  • times
  • divide
  • share equally
  • remainder
  • groups of

Watch for

  • Confusing multiples with factors. Multiples are what you land on by jumping; they get bigger.
  • Ignoring the remainder. After sharing, always ask “Any left over?”

What it sounds like at home

A short example of the conversation. Your words will differ; the questions are what matter.

YouThe frog jumps in 3s. Will it land on 24?

Your child3, 6, 9… yes.

YouThe squirrel jumps in 4s. On 24 too?

Your childYes, 4 × 6.

YouSo 24 is a common…

Your childMultiple!

A game for this week: Jump race

  1. Chalk a number line to 60.
  2. One player jumps in 4s, the other in 6s.
  3. Mark where both land.
  4. Name the common multiples.

A 5-day plan, 10 minutes a day

  1. Day 1Jumps in 3s and 4s on a number line.
  2. Day 2Multiples of 6 and 3.
  3. Day 3Share with remainders.
  4. Day 4Rows and columns stories.
  5. Day 5Jump race game.

Everyday moments to practise

  • Chairs in equal rows.
  • Sweets in packets of 6.
  • Buses arriving every 15 minutes.
  • Sharing with some left over.

Quick check

Ask these at the end of the week. Tap to see the answer.

First five multiples of 4?

4, 8, 12, 16, 20.

Is 24 a multiple of both 6 and 8?

Yes.

23 shared among 4: each gets? Left over?

5 each, 3 left.

Ready for the next chapter when your child…

  • Lists multiples of 2 to 10.
  • Finds common multiples.
  • Divides with a remainder.

Activities, wording and illustrations are Mathify Kids’ own, following the topics of NCERT’s Maths Mela (Class 4). See the full Class 4 parent guide for every chapter.
