How to teach Class 4 Maths Chapter 8, Weigh it, Pour it, at home
Kilograms, grams, litres and millilitres, taught with things you already have at home: a 10-minute activity, a game for the week, a 5-day plan and the mistakes to watch for.
NCERT Class 4 Maths Chapter 8 Weigh it, Pour it: what it teaches
Your child moves to standard units of weight and capacity: 1 kilogram is 1000 grams, and 1 litre is 1000 millilitres. They read packet labels, fill a litre bottle from smaller bottles, and estimate weights before checking.
Why it matters later. Grams, kilograms, litres and millilitres are used in cooking, shopping and science throughout school.

You need
- a kitchen scale
- a 1 litre bottle and smaller bottles (200 ml, 500 ml)
- packets with weights printed on them
- a measuring cup
Tonight’s 10 minutes
- Read labels: which packets are in grams, which in kilograms, which in ml?
- Fill the 1 litre bottle from a 500 ml bottle. How many times? Then from a 200 ml bottle.
- Weigh fruits on the kitchen scale. Guess first, then check.
- Find packets that add up to about 1 kg.
Words to use
- kilogram (kg)
- gram (g)
- litre (L)
- millilitre (ml)

- Mixing weight and capacity units. Weight: kg and g. Liquids: litres and ml.
