How to teach Class 4 Maths Chapter 6, Measuring Length, at home
Metres, centimetres and using a scale, taught with things you already have at home: a 10-minute activity, a game for the week, a 5-day plan and the mistakes to watch for.
NCERT Class 4 Maths Chapter 6 Measuring Length: what it teaches
Length, height, breadth and depth are all lengths. Your child uses half-metre and quarter-metre ropes, learns that 1 metre is 100 centimetres, measures with a scale correctly and estimates lengths before measuring.
Why it matters later. Accurate measuring with a scale is needed for geometry, perimeter and science practicals.

You need
- a 30 cm scale
- a measuring tape
- string and a marker
- objects of different lengths
Tonight’s 10 minutes
- Make a 1 m rope, then fold it for ½ m and ¼ m. How many centimetres is each?
- Measure a book and a pencil with the scale, starting from 0.
- Guess, then measure: your child’s height, the table’s length, a door’s width.
- Measure a curved line (like a bangle’s edge) using string, then the scale.
Words to use
- metre
- centimetre
- 100 cm = 1 m
- length
- height
- breadth
- depth
- estimate
Watch for
- Starting measurement from the scale’s edge or from 1. Line up with the 0 mark every time.
- Mixing units: writing 1 m 50 as 150 m. Say it in words: one metre fifty centimetres is 150 centimetres.
What it sounds like at home
A short example of the conversation. Your words will differ; the questions are what matter.
YouGuess the table’s length.
Your child1 metre.
YouMeasure with the tape.
Your child1 metre and 20 centimetres.
YouHow many centimetres is that?
Your child120.
A game for this week: Guess and measure
- Pick five objects.
- Each player writes a guess in centimetres.
- Measure with a scale.
- The closest guess scores a point.
A 5-day plan, 10 minutes a day
- Day 1Metre, half and quarter metre ropes.
- Day 2Measure with a scale from 0.
- Day 3Estimate then measure.
- Day 4Measure curved lines with string.
- Day 5Guess and measure game.
Everyday moments to practise
- Buying cloth by the metre.
- Height chart on the wall.
- Ruler work in notebooks.
- Room sizes for furniture.
Quick check
Ask these at the end of the week. Tap to see the answer.
How many cm in 1 m?
100.
How many cm in ½ m?
50.
A table is 1 m 20 cm. How many cm?
120.
Ready for the next chapter when your child…
- Measures with a scale correctly.
- Converts metres to centimetres.
- Estimates lengths sensibly.
Activities, wording and illustrations are Mathify Kids’ own, following the topics of NCERT’s Maths Mela (Class 4). See the full Class 4 parent guide for every chapter.
Questions parents ask
How many centimetres make a metre?
100.
What are length, breadth, height and depth?
All are lengths measured in different directions.
How do I measure a curved line?
Lay a string along it, then measure the string.
