How to teach Class 4 Maths Chapter 10, Elephants, Tigers, and Leopards, at home
Addition and subtraction strategies, taught with things you already have at home: a 10-minute activity, a game for the week, a 5-day plan and the mistakes to watch for.
NCERT Class 4 Maths Chapter 10 Elephants, Tigers, and Leopards: what it teaches
Games like NIM and an addition chart build number sense, then your child adds and subtracts four-digit numbers with and without regrouping, estimating first and checking by reverse operation.
Why it matters later. Fast, accurate four-digit addition and subtraction is expected in all later classes.

You need
- paper and pencil
- a 0–12 addition chart (draw a grid)
- play money up to ₹5000 or number cards
Tonight’s 10 minutes
- Play NIM: add 1 or 2 in turns; whoever reaches 10 wins. Find the winning number to aim for.
- Look at the addition chart: what patterns do you see along rows and diagonals?
- Add ₹2,045 + ₹1,240 in columns. Then estimate to check.
- Subtract ₹3,578 − ₹1,240 and check by adding the answer back.
Words to use
- sum
- difference
- regroup
- estimate
- check
- strategy
Watch for
- Regrouping mistakes with zeros, like 3,005 − 1,238. Open a thousand into hundreds, then tens, then ones, step by step with cards.
- Not checking answers. Add the answer to the smaller number; you should get the bigger one.
What it sounds like at home
