How to teach Class 4 Maths Chapter 11, Fun with Symmetry, at home
Lines of symmetry and mirror images, taught with things you already have at home: a 10-minute activity, a game for the week, a 5-day plan and the mistakes to watch for.
NCERT Class 4 Maths Chapter 11 Fun with Symmetry: what it teaches
Your child finds lines of symmetry by folding, draws the missing half of shapes, uses a mirror to check, and makes paper-cut designs by folding a paper twice for more than one line of symmetry.
Why it matters later. Symmetry is used in geometry, art and science, and prepares for reflections in Class 6 and 7.

You need
- paper squares
- scissors
- a small mirror
- squared paper
Tonight’s 10 minutes
- Fold a paper square in half, cut a shape along the fold and open it.
- Fold a paper twice, cut, and open: how many fold lines of symmetry?
- Draw half a shape on squared paper; your child completes the other half.
- Hold a mirror on the letters of your name. Which letters stay the same?
Words to use
- symmetry
- line of symmetry
- mirror half
- fold
- reflection
Watch for
- Drawing the missing half shifted, not mirrored. Count squares from the line of symmetry on both sides.
- Thinking a rectangle has diagonal lines of symmetry. Fold a rectangle along its diagonal: the halves don’t match.
What it sounds like at home
A short example of the conversation. Your words will differ; the questions are what matter.
YouFold this square. How many ways can you get matching halves?
Your childDown, across… and both corners.
YouSo how many lines?
Your child4.
YouDoes a rectangle fold on its corner line?
Your childNo, it doesn’t match.
A game for this week: Mirror half
- Draw half a picture on squared paper along a line.
- Your child draws the other half.
- Check with a mirror on the line.
- Swap roles with harder shapes.
A 5-day plan, 10 minutes a day
- Day 1Fold and cut a symmetrical shape.
- Day 2Fold twice for four parts.
- Day 3Complete half-drawings.
- Day 4Mirror letters.
- Day 5Mirror half game.
Everyday moments to practise
- Rangoli designs.
- Butterflies and leaves.
- Letters on signboards.
- Paper-cut decorations.
Quick check
Ask these at the end of the week. Tap to see the answer.

Ready for the next chapter when your child…
- Finds lines of symmetry by folding.
- Completes a symmetrical drawing.
- Knows a square has 4 lines of symmetry.
Activities, wording and illustrations are Mathify Kids’ own, following the topics of NCERT’s Maths Mela (Class 4). See the full Class 4 parent guide for every chapter.
