How to teach Class 2 Maths Chapter 8, Grouping and Sharing, at home
Multiplication and equal sharing, taught with things you already have at home: a 10-minute activity, a game for the week, a 5-day plan and the mistakes to watch for.
NCERT Class 2 Maths Chapter 8 Grouping and Sharing: what it teaches
Your child moves from adding the same number again and again to writing it as multiplication: 4 + 4 + 4 is 3 × 4. They build the tables of 2, 3, 5 and 10, see that 3 × 4 and 4 × 3 give the same answer, and start sharing things equally, the first idea of division.
Why it matters later. Multiplication and sharing are the next big operations. The tables of 2, 3, 5 and 10 learned here grow into all tables in Class 3, and equal sharing becomes division.

You need
- small plates or katoris
- 30 beans, peanuts or laddoo-sized objects
- a pencil box of pencils
- paper for writing tables
Tonight’s 10 minutes
- Put 4 beans on each of 3 plates. Say it three ways: 4 + 4 + 4, 3 groups of 4, 3 × 4 = 12.
- Now make 4 plates of 3. Count again. Same total? Talk about why.
- Build the 5 table with beans, one row of 5 at a time, and write each line.
- Share 12 laddoos equally between 3 people, one at a time. How many each?
Words to use
- groups of
- times
- ×
- equal groups
- share equally
- each
- table of
Watch for
- Writing 3 × 4 as 3 + 4. Build it: three plates, four on each. The answer is the total, not the count of plates and beans added.
- Sharing unequally and not checking. After sharing, line up each person’s share side by side to check they are equal.
What it sounds like at home
A short example of the conversation. Your words will differ; the questions are what matter.
You3 plates, 4 beans on each. Say it as times.
Your child3 times 4.
YouHow many beans?
Your child4, 8, 12.
YouNow share these 12 between 4 people.
Your childOne each, again… 3 each.
A game for this week: Plate tables
- Put out 2 to 6 plates.
- Roll a dice: that many beans go on each plate.
- Your child says the multiplication: 4 plates × 3 beans = 12.
- Check by counting. Swap roles.
A 5-day plan, 10 minutes a day
- Day 1Equal groups on plates: say it three ways.
- Day 2Swap groups and size: 3 × 4 and 4 × 3.
- Day 3Build and write the 2 and 5 tables.
- Day 4Build the 3 and 10 tables.
- Day 5Share equally, then play Plate tables.
Everyday moments to practise
- Wheels on 5 autorickshaws.
- Chappals in pairs by the door.
- Sharing sweets equally among cousins.
- Legs on 3 chairs.
Quick check
Ask these at the end of the week. Tap to see the answer.
What is 5 × 4?
20.
Is 3 × 4 the same as 4 × 3?
Yes, both are 12.
Share 15 bananas equally among 3 monkeys. How many each?
5.
Ready for the next chapter when your child…
- Writes repeated addition as multiplication.
- Knows the 2, 5 and 10 tables and most of the 3 table.
- Shares a number equally and checks the shares.

Questions parents ask
Which tables are in Class 2 maths?
The tables of 2, 3, 5 and 10, built from equal groups.
Is division taught in Class 2?
As equal sharing: sharing 12 laddoos among 3 people. The ÷ sign comes later.
Why is 3 × 4 the same as 4 × 3?
3 groups of 4 and 4 groups of 3 both make 12. Arranging beans in a 3-by-4 rectangle shows it.
