NCERT Class 2 Maths Chapter 11 Data Handling: what it teaches

Your child collects answers from people, records them in a table, and draws a picture graph with one face for each person. Then they read the graph: which is most, least, more than, less than.

Why it matters later. Tables and picture graphs are how children will read data in every subject. Class 3 adds bar graphs and tallies on this base.

Group tallies in fives to count fast.

You need

  • paper with a simple 2-column table
  • sticky notes or small paper faces
  • family members to ask

Tonight’s 10 minutes

  1. Ask everyone at home: “What is your favourite fruit?” Your child writes each answer.
  2. Make a table: fruit in one column, number of people in the other.
  3. Draw one smiling face per person above each fruit to make a picture graph.
  4. Ask questions from the graph: most liked, least liked, how many more?

Words to use

  • table
  • count
  • most
  • least
  • more than
  • less than
  • equal
  • graph

Watch for

  • Drawing faces of different sizes so a column looks bigger. Keep every face the same size and spacing, or use one sticky note each.
  • Counting tally marks wrongly. Group tallies in fives with a line across, then count in fives.

What it sounds like at home

A short example of the conversation. Your words will differ; the questions are what matter.

YouWhich fruit has the most faces?

Your childMango, 5.

YouAnd the least?

Your childGuava, 1.

YouHow many more like mango than guava?

Your child4 more.

A game for this week: Family survey

  1. Pick a question: favourite colour, game or snack.
  2. Your child asks everyone and records answers in a table.
  3. Draw a picture graph with one face per person.
  4. Present the result at dinner and ask two questions about it.

A 5-day plan, 10 minutes a day

  1. Day 1Ask a family question and write answers.
  2. Day 2Turn answers into a table.
  3. Day 3Draw a picture graph with faces.
  4. Day 4Ask most, least, more than questions.
  5. Day 5Family survey on a new question.

Everyday moments to practise

  • Family vote for Sunday dinner.
  • Counting colours of cars in the parking.
  • Favourite games in the building.
  • Birthdays in each month in your class.
