How to help your child with Class 11 Maths Chapter 9, Straight Lines, at home

Slope and equations of lines, explained for parents: a 45-minute study session, a quick challenge, a 5-day plan and the mistakes to watch for.

NCERT Class 11 Maths Chapter 9 Straight Lines: what it teaches

Your teen finds the slope of a line, uses slopes to test parallel and perpendicular lines, writes equations in point-slope, slope-intercept and general forms, and finds the distance from a point to a line.

Why it matters later. Straight lines lead to conic sections, calculus (tangents) and linear programming.

(1, 2) and (4, 8)m = 6/3 = 2y − 2 = 2(x − 1)
Slope then equation.
m₁ = 2, m₂ = −½m₁m₂ = −1perpendicular
Product of slopes is −1.
(3, 4) to 3x + 4y − 5 = 0|9 + 16 − 5| / 5= 4
Plug into the formula.

You need

  • graph paper
  • a ruler

Tonight’s 45 minutes

  1. Find the slope through (1, 2) and (4, 8) (2).
  2. Write its equation: y − 2 = 2(x − 1).
  3. Check if y = 2x + 3 and y = −½x + 1 are perpendicular (m₁m₂ = −1).
  4. Find the distance from (3, 4) to 3x + 4y − 5 = 0 (4).

Words to use

  • slope
  • intercept
  • point-slope form
  • parallel
  • perpendicular
  • distance

Watch for

  • Swapping rise and run. Slope = (y₂ − y₁)/(x₂ − x₁).
  • Sign errors in the distance formula. Use |ax₀ + by₀ + c| / √(a² + b²).

What it sounds like at home

A short example of the conversation. Your words will differ; the questions are what matter.

Youy = 2x + 3 and y = −½x + 1?

Your child2 × (−½) = −1: perpendicular.

A game for this week: Line match

  1. Draw lines on graph paper.
  2. Others write their equations.
  3. Check with points.
  4. Swap roles.

A 5-day plan, 45 minutes a day

  1. Day 1Explain-back.
  2. Day 2Worked examples.
  3. Day 3Practice set.
  4. Day 4Real-life problem.
  5. Day 5Mixed quiz.

Everyday moments to practise

  • Ramps and roads.
  • Cost graphs.
  • Speed graphs.
  • Architecture.

Quick check

Ask these at the end of the week. Tap to see the answer.

Slope through (1, 2), (4, 8)?

2.

Slopes of perpendicular lines multiply to?

−1.

Distance from (3, 4) to 3x + 4y − 5 = 0?

4.

Ready for the next chapter when your child…

  • Finds slopes.
  • Writes equations of lines.
  • Uses parallel/perpendicular conditions and distance formula.

Activities, wording and illustrations are Mathify Kids’ own, following the topics of NCERT’s Mathematics (Class 11). See the full Class 11 parent guide for every chapter.

Questions parents ask

What does slope mean?

Rate of change: rise over run.

Which form is easiest?

Slope-intercept y = mx + c for graphing; point-slope when a point and slope are known.

When are lines perpendicular?

When the product of slopes is −1.
