How to help your child with Class 11 Maths Chapter 12, Limits and Derivatives, at home

Intuitive limits and derivatives, explained for parents: a 45-minute study session, a quick challenge, a 5-day plan and the mistakes to watch for.

tangent slope = derivative

NCERT Class 11 Maths Chapter 12 Limits and Derivatives: what it teaches

The start of calculus. Your teen finds limits intuitively and algebraically, including the standard limit sin x/x → 1, and meets the derivative as the rate of change, using rules for sums, products and quotients.

Why it matters later. Limits and derivatives lead to continuity, differentiation and integration in Class 12.

(x² − 4)/(x − 2)= x + 2 (x ≠ 2)limit = 4
Remove 0/0 by simplifying.
d/dx xⁿ = nxⁿ⁻¹d/dx (x³ + 2x)= 3x² + 2
Differentiate term by term.
sin x / x as x → 0(radians)= 1
A key limit in calculus.

You need

  • a calculator
  • graph paper
  • a stopwatch for rate examples

Tonight’s 45 minutes

  1. Compute (x² − 4)/(x − 2) for x near 2: approaches 4.
  2. Find lim sin x/x as x → 0 with a calculator in radians.
  3. Differentiate x³ + 2x from first principles and with rules.
  4. Interpret speed as the derivative of distance.

Words to use

  • limit
  • derivative
  • rate of change
  • first principles
  • product rule
  • quotient rule

Watch for

  • Substituting and getting 0/0, then stopping. Factorise or rationalise first.
  • Degree mode for trig limits. Use radians.

What it sounds like at home

A short example of the conversation. Your words will differ; the questions are what matter.

You(x² − 4)/(x − 2) at x = 2 gives 0/0. Now?

Your childFactorise: x + 2 → 4.

A game for this week: Speed from distance

  1. Record distance walked every 5 seconds.
  2. Compute average speeds.
  3. Shrink intervals.
  4. Discuss instantaneous speed.

A 5-day plan, 45 minutes a day

  1. Day 1Explain-back.
  2. Day 2Worked examples.
  3. Day 3Practice set.
  4. Day 4Real-life problem.
  5. Day 5Mixed quiz.

Everyday moments to practise

  • Speed and acceleration.
  • Growth rates.
  • Marginal cost.
  • Slope of roads.

Quick check

Ask these at the end of the week. Tap to see the answer.

lim (x² − 4)/(x − 2), x → 2?

4.

d/dx (x³)?

3x².

lim sin x/x, x → 0?

1.

Ready for the next chapter when your child…

  • Evaluates limits.
  • Differentiates polynomials and simple functions.
  • Explains the derivative as a rate.

Activities, wording and illustrations are Mathify Kids’ own, following the topics of NCERT’s Mathematics (Class 11). See the full Class 11 parent guide for every chapter.

Questions parents ask

What is a limit?

The value a function approaches as x approaches a point.

What is a derivative?

The instantaneous rate of change, the slope of the tangent.

Why radians in trig limits?

sin x/x → 1 only holds in radians.
