How to help your child with Class 11 Maths Chapter 1, Sets, at home

Sets, subsets, Venn diagrams and operations, explained for parents: a 45-minute study session, a quick challenge, a 5-day plan and the mistakes to watch for.

NCERT Class 11 Maths Chapter 1 Sets: what it teaches

Your teen learns to describe collections precisely: roster and set-builder forms, empty, finite and infinite sets, subsets and power sets, and union, intersection, difference and complement with Venn diagrams.

Why it matters later. Set language is used in relations, functions, probability and all higher maths.

See it: this chapter in pictures

n(A) = 20, n(B) = 15n(A ∩ B) = 5n(A ∪ B) = 30
Subtract the overlap once.
{a, b, c} has2³ = 8 subsets∅, {a}, …, {a, b, c}
Each element is in or out.
∈: element of a set⊂: subset of a set2 ∈ {1, 2}, {2} ⊂ {1, 2}
Two different symbols.

You need

  • paper for Venn diagrams
  • two coloured pens

Tonight’s 45 minutes

  1. List A = {students who play cricket}, B = {who play football} in your family or building.
  2. Draw a Venn diagram and find A ∪ B, A ∩ B, A − B.
  3. Count subsets of {a, b, c} (8) and write the power set.
  4. Verify n(A ∪ B) = n(A) + n(B) − n(A ∩ B) with real numbers.

Words to use

  • set
  • element
  • subset
  • power set
  • union
  • intersection
  • complement

Watch for

  • Confusing ∈ and ⊂. ∈ is for an element; ⊂ is for a set inside a set.
  • Double counting in union. Subtract the intersection once.

What it sounds like at home

A short example of the conversation. Your words will differ; the questions are what matter.

You20 like tea, 15 coffee, 5 both. How many like at least one?

Your child20 + 15 − 5 = 30.

A game for this week: Venn survey

  1. Ask 15 people two yes/no questions.
  2. Fill a Venn diagram.
  3. Compute union and intersection counts.
  4. Verify the counting formula.

A 5-day plan, 45 minutes a day

  1. Day 1Explain-back.
  2. Day 2Worked examples.
  3. Day 3Practice set.
  4. Day 4Real-life problem.
  5. Day 5Mixed quiz.

Everyday moments to practise

  • Survey analysis.
  • Database searches.
  • Classifying items.
  • Filtering online shopping.

Quick check

Ask these at the end of the week. Tap to see the answer.

Number of subsets of a 3-element set?

8.

If n(A) = 20, n(B) = 15, n(A ∩ B) = 5, n(A ∪ B)?

30.

Is ∅ a subset of every set?

Yes.

Ready for the next chapter when your child…

  • Writes sets in roster and set-builder form.
  • Performs set operations.
  • Uses Venn diagrams to solve counting problems.

Activities, wording and illustrations are Mathify Kids’ own, following the topics of NCERT’s Mathematics (Class 11). See the full Class 11 parent guide for every chapter.

Questions parents ask

What is a power set?

The set of all subsets; a set with n elements has 2ⁿ subsets.

What is the difference between A − B and B − A?

A − B has elements in A not in B; B − A the reverse.

Why learn sets?

They are the language of relations, functions and probability.
