NCERT Class 11 Maths Chapter 7 Binomial Theorem: what it teaches

Your teen expands (a + b)ⁿ using Pascal’s triangle and the binomial theorem with nCr coefficients, finds general and middle terms, and uses expansions for quick approximations.

Why it matters later. The binomial theorem is used in probability distributions and calculus approximations.

See it: this chapter in pictures

(a + b)⁴= a⁴ + 4a³b + 6a²b² + 4ab³ + b⁴row 4: 1 4 6 4 1
Use Pascal’s row.
Tᵣ₊₁ = ⁿCᵣ aⁿ⁻ʳ bʳ(x + 2)⁶, T₄: r = 3= 20 × 8 x³ = 160x³
r is one less than the term number.
(99)⁵ = (100 − 1)⁵≈ 10¹⁰ − 5 × 10⁸ + …≈ 9,509,900,499
Expansions make hard powers manageable.

You need

  • paper for Pascal’s triangle
  • a calculator

Tonight’s 45 minutes

  1. Build Pascal’s triangle to row 6.
  2. Expand (a + b)⁴ using row 4: 1, 4, 6, 4, 1.
  3. Find the 4th term of (x + 2)⁶.
  4. Compute (99)⁵ approximately using (100 − 1)⁵.

Words to use

  • binomial
  • Pascal’s triangle
  • coefficient
  • general term
  • middle term

Watch for

  • Starting the term count at r = 1. The general term is Tᵣ₊₁ = ⁿCᵣ aⁿ⁻ʳ bʳ.
  • Forgetting powers on constants. (2)³ = 8 in the coefficient.

What it sounds like at home

A short example of the conversation. Your words will differ; the questions are what matter.

YouRow sums of Pascal’s triangle?

Your childPowers of 2: 1, 2, 4, 8…

A game for this week: Pascal patterns

  1. Build Pascal’s triangle.
  2. Find patterns: row sums, diagonals.
  3. Explain one pattern.
  4. Most patterns wins.

A 5-day plan, 45 minutes a day
