Multiplying decimals: a worked example (2.4 × 1.3)
- Ignore the decimal points and multiply: 24 × 13 = 312.
- Count the decimal places in the question: one in 2.4 and one in 1.3, so two in total.
- Put two decimal places in the answer: 3.12.
How to use it at home and in class
At home
Estimate first: 2.4 × 1.3 is a bit more than 2 × 1 = 2, so 3.12 makes sense and 31.2 doesn’t. Ten problems a day works better than a whole sheet at once. Mark them together with the answer key, then ask your child to explain one they got wrong: finding the mistake themselves is where the learning happens.
In class
Use the first row as a warm-up, a full page for independent practice, or five questions as an exit ticket. For a retake or a second group, make a new version with the test maker so every child gets different numbers.
Mistakes to watch for
- Lining up the decimal points as in addition.
- Counting decimal places in only one of the numbers.
What to practice before and after multiplying decimals
- Before: adding and subtracting decimals. If this sheet is a struggle, go back a step.
- Learn it first: the multiplying decimals lesson and the decimals chart.
