Adding and subtracting decimals: a worked example (12.5 + 3.78)

12.50 + 3.78 ─────── 16.28

  1. Line up the decimal points. Write 12.5 as 12.50 so both have two decimal places.
  2. Add as usual from the right: 0 + 8 = 8, 5 + 7 = 12 (write 2, carry 1), 2 + 3 + 1 = 6, 1 + 0 = 1.
  3. Put the decimal point straight down: 16.28.

How to use it at home and in class

At home

Squared paper helps: one digit per box, with the decimal point on a line. Ten problems a day works better than a whole sheet at once. Mark them together with the answer key, then ask your child to explain one they got wrong: finding the mistake themselves is where the learning happens.

In class

Use the first row as a warm-up, a full page for independent practice, or five questions as an exit ticket. For a retake or a second group, make a new version with the test maker so every child gets different numbers.
