Rounding decimals: a worked example (Round 4.376)
- To the nearest tenth: look at the hundredths digit, 7. Round up to 4.4.
- To the nearest hundredth: look at the thousandths digit, 6. Round up to 4.38.
- Drop every digit after the place you round to.
How to use it at home and in class
At home
Underline the digit you are rounding to, then circle the digit next to it on the right. The circled digit decides. Ten problems a day works better than a whole sheet at once. Mark them together with the answer key, then ask your child to explain one they got wrong: finding the mistake themselves is where the learning happens.
In class
Use the first row as a warm-up, a full page for independent practice, or five questions as an exit ticket. For a retake or a second group, make a new version with the test maker so every child gets different numbers.
Mistakes to watch for
- Rounding each digit in turn from the right, which can change the answer.
- Keeping digits after the rounding place.
What to practice before and after rounding decimals
- Before: comparing decimals. If this sheet is a struggle, go back a step.
- After: adding and subtracting decimals, once this one is mostly right.
- Learn it first: the rounding decimals lesson and the decimals chart.
