Money: a worked example (2 quarters, 3 dimes, 1 nickel and 4 pennies)
- Start with the biggest coins: 2 quarters = 50¢.
- Count on: 3 dimes takes it to 80¢, 1 nickel to 85¢.
- 4 pennies takes it to 89¢.
How to use it at home and in class
At home
Use real coins: set a price and have your child pay the exact amount. Ten problems a day works better than a whole sheet at once. Mark them together with the answer key, then ask your child to explain one they got wrong: finding the mistake themselves is where the learning happens.
In class
Use the first row as a warm-up, a full page for independent practice, or five questions as an exit ticket. For a retake or a second group, make a new version with the test maker so every child gets different numbers.
Mistakes to watch for
- Counting coins by number instead of value.
- Starting with pennies, which makes counting on harder.
What to practice before and after money
- Before: telling time. If this sheet is a struggle, go back a step.
- After: metric units, once this one is mostly right.
- Learn it first: the money lesson and the money chart.
