Make a new version

Customary units: a worked example (3 ft to inches, 2 gal to quarts and 5 lb to ounces)

  1. 1 ft = 12 in, so 3 ft = 36 in.
  2. 1 gal = 4 qt, so 2 gal = 8 qt.
  3. 1 lb = 16 oz, so 5 lb = 80 oz.

How to use it at home and in class

At home

Keep a conversion chart visible. These facts need memorizing, and seeing them often helps. Ten problems a day works better than a whole sheet at once. Mark them together with the answer key, then ask your child to explain one they got wrong: finding the mistake themselves is where the learning happens.

In class

Use the first row as a warm-up, a full page for independent practice, or five questions as an exit ticket. For a retake or a second group, make a new version with the test maker so every child gets different numbers.
