How to teach Class 6 Maths Chapter 6, Perimeter and Area, at home

Perimeter, area and area of triangles, taught with things you already have at home: a 20-minute activity, a game for the week, a 5-day plan and the mistakes to watch for.

triangle = ½ of the rectangle

NCERT Class 6 Maths Chapter 6 Perimeter and Area: what it teaches

Your child finds perimeters of rectangles, squares and regular shapes, finds areas using squared paper and formulas, and discovers that a triangle’s area is half of a rectangle around it.

Why it matters later. Area and perimeter formulas are used in Classes 7 and 8 for circles, polygons and surface area.

See it: this chapter in pictures

7 m4 mP = 2 × (7 + 4) = 22 m
Perimeter = 2 × (length + breadth).
6 × 5 = 30 cm²
Area = length × breadth, in square units.
same string, different shapes, different areas
Same perimeter can enclose different areas.

You need

  • squared paper
  • a ruler
  • scissors
  • a tape measure

Tonight’s 20 minutes

  1. Measure a room and find its perimeter in metres.
  2. Find the area of a notebook cover: length × breadth.
  3. Draw a triangle on squared paper inside a rectangle. Show it is half of the rectangle.
  4. Make shapes with the same perimeter but different areas with a loop of string.

Words to use

  • perimeter
  • area
  • square unit
  • length
  • breadth
  • formula
  • triangle

Watch for

  • Using cm for area instead of square cm. Area is always in square units: cm², m².
  • Adding only two sides for perimeter of a rectangle. Perimeter = 2 × (length + breadth).

What it sounds like at home

A short example of the conversation. Your words will differ; the questions are what matter.

YouThe room is 7 m by 4 m. Perimeter?

Your child7 + 4 + 7 + 4 = 22 m.

YouArea?

Your child28 square metres.

YouA triangle in a 6 by 4 rectangle?

Your childHalf: 12.

A game for this week: Same perimeter, different area

  1. Make a loop of string 24 cm long.
  2. Form rectangles with it on squared paper.
  3. Find each area.
  4. Largest area wins; notice which shape it is.

A 5-day plan, 20 minutes a day

  1. Day 1Perimeter of a room.
  2. Day 2Area of a notebook.
  3. Day 3Triangle as half a rectangle.
  4. Day 4Same perimeter, different areas.
  5. Day 5String rectangle game.

Everyday moments to practise

  • Buying floor tiles.
  • Fencing a garden.
  • Painting walls.
  • Sizes of plots.

Quick check

Ask these at the end of the week. Tap to see the answer.

Perimeter of a 7 m by 4 m room?

22 m.

Area of a 6 cm by 5 cm rectangle?

30 cm².

Area of a triangle inside a 6 × 4 rectangle with the same base and height?

12 square units.

Ready for the next chapter when your child…

  • Finds perimeter and area of rectangles.
  • Finds area of a triangle as half a rectangle.
  • Uses correct units.

Activities, wording and illustrations are Mathify Kids’ own, following the topics of NCERT’s Ganita Prakash (Class 6). See the full Class 6 parent guide for every chapter.

Questions parents ask

What is the area of a triangle in Class 6?

Half the area of the rectangle with the same base and height.

Why is area in square units?

Area counts unit squares that cover a surface.

Can shapes with the same perimeter have different areas?

Yes. Squares give the largest area for a fixed perimeter.
