How to teach Class 6 Maths Chapter 1, Patterns in Mathematics, at home

Number sequences and shape patterns, taught with things you already have at home: a 20-minute activity, a game for the week, a 5-day plan and the mistakes to watch for.

14916square numbers: 1 + 3 + 5 + 7 = 16

NCERT Class 6 Maths Chapter 1 Patterns in Mathematics: what it teaches

The book opens by calling maths the study of patterns. Your child explores sequences like odd numbers, square numbers, triangular numbers and powers of 2, draws them as dot pictures, and finds links such as “adding odd numbers gives square numbers”.

Why it matters later. Pattern thinking is the heart of algebra, which begins formally in Class 7 and 8.

Triangular numbers: 1, 3, 6, 10.
1+3+5+7odd numbers add up to squares
Each odd number adds an L-shaped layer.
124816powers of 2: keep doubling
Powers of 2 double each time.

You need

  • dot paper or squared paper
  • coins or buttons
  • coloured pencils

Tonight’s 20 minutes

  1. Arrange buttons as squares: 1, 4, 9, 16. Then as triangles: 1, 3, 6, 10.
  2. Add odd numbers: 1, 1+3, 1+3+5… What do you notice? (Square numbers.)
  3. Draw the powers of 2 by doubling a strip of paper by folding.
  4. Look at shape sequences like polygons with 3, 4, 5 sides. How do corners and sides grow?

Words to use

  • sequence
  • pattern
  • square numbers
  • triangular numbers
  • powers of 2
  • rule

Watch for

  • Guessing the next term without a rule. Ask “What is the rule?” before “What comes next?”
  • Counting dots wrongly in larger pictures. Count row by row and write each row total.

What it sounds like at home

A short example of the conversation. Your words will differ; the questions are what matter.

YouAdd 1 + 3 + 5 + 7.

Your child16.

YouAnd 1 + 3 + 5?

Your child9. They’re square numbers!

YouWhy?

Your childEach odd number adds an L around the square.

A game for this week: Pattern builder

  1. One player builds the first three terms of a pattern with buttons.
  2. The other predicts the 5th term and explains the rule.
  3. Build it to check.
  4. Swap roles.

A 5-day plan, 20 minutes a day

  1. Day 1Square and triangular numbers with buttons.
  2. Day 2Sums of odd numbers.
  3. Day 3Powers of 2 by folding.
  4. Day 4Shape sequences.
  5. Day 5Pattern builder game.

Everyday moments to practise

  • Tiles arranged in squares.
  • Stacks of cans in triangles.
  • Doubling savings each week.
  • Patterns in rangoli.

Quick check

Ask these at the end of the week. Tap to see the answer.

Next square number after 25?

36.

1 + 3 + 5 + 7 = ?

16, a square number.

Next triangular number after 10?

15.

Ready for the next chapter when your child…

  • Names common number sequences.
  • Explains a rule for a pattern.
  • Draws sequences as dot pictures.

Activities, wording and illustrations are Mathify Kids’ own, following the topics of NCERT’s Ganita Prakash (Class 6). See the full Class 6 parent guide for every chapter.

Questions parents ask

What patterns are in Class 6 Chapter 1?

Odd, even, square, triangular numbers, powers of 2 and shape sequences.

Why is the sum of odd numbers a square number?

Each new odd number adds an L-shaped layer that grows the square.

What are triangular numbers?

1, 3, 6, 10, 15: dots arranged in triangles.
