How to teach Class 6 Maths Chapter 2, Lines and Angles, at home

Points, lines, rays and measuring angles, taught with things you already have at home: a 20-minute activity, a game for the week, a 5-day plan and the mistakes to watch for.

NCERT Class 6 Maths Chapter 2 Lines and Angles: what it teaches

Your child learns the language of geometry: point, line segment, line, ray and angle. They compare angles, build rotating arms, use a protractor to measure and draw angles in degrees, and name acute, right, obtuse, straight and reflex angles.

Why it matters later. Angle measurement is used throughout geometry: triangles, polygons and constructions in Classes 7 and 8.

Clocks make good angle practice.

You need

  • a protractor and ruler
  • two strips of card and a pin
  • a clock

Tonight’s 20 minutes

  1. Draw a segment, a line and a ray and label them with letters.
  2. Make a rotating arm from two strips and a pin. Open it to show a right angle and a straight angle.
  3. Measure five angles in the house with a protractor: door corner, open scissors, clock hands at 2:00.
  4. Draw angles of 30°, 90° and 135°.

Words to use

  • point
  • line segment
  • ray
  • vertex
  • degree
  • acute
  • right
  • obtuse
  • straight
  • reflex
  • protractor

Watch for

  • Reading the wrong scale on the protractor. Start from the 0 on the arm that lies on the baseline, and count up from there.
  • Thinking longer arms mean a bigger angle. Angle size is the turn; draw the same angle with short and long arms.

What it sounds like at home

A short example of the conversation. Your words will differ; the questions are what matter.

YouAngle between clock hands at 3:00?

Your child90 degrees.

YouAt 6:00?

Your child180, a straight angle.

YouMeasure the open scissors.

Your childAbout 40°, acute.

A game for this week: Angle guess

  1. One player draws an angle.
  2. Others guess its size in degrees.
  3. Measure with a protractor.
  4. Closest guess scores.

A 5-day plan, 20 minutes a day

  1. Day 1Point, segment, line, ray.
  2. Day 2Rotating arms.
  3. Day 3Measure angles at home.
  4. Day 4Draw given angles.
  5. Day 5Angle guess game.

Everyday moments to practise

  • Clock hands.
  • Door openings.
  • Ramps and roofs.
  • Sports: angles of shots.

Quick check

Ask these at the end of the week. Tap to see the answer.

How many degrees in a right angle?

90°.

Name an angle between 90° and 180°.

An obtuse angle, e.g. 120°.

Angle between clock hands at 3:00?

90°.

Ready for the next chapter when your child…

  • Uses geometry vocabulary correctly.
  • Measures angles with a protractor.
  • Names angle types.

Activities, wording and illustrations are Mathify Kids’ own, following the topics of NCERT’s Ganita Prakash (Class 6). See the full Class 6 parent guide for every chapter.

Questions parents ask

What is a ray?

A part of a line with one endpoint that goes on forever in one direction.

How do I read a protractor?

Place the centre on the vertex, line up one arm with 0, and read from that scale.

What is a reflex angle?

An angle between 180° and 360°.
