How to teach Class 3 Maths Chapter 7, Raksha Bandhan, at home

Multiplication and division, taught with things you already have at home: a 10-minute activity, a game for the week, a 5-day plan and the mistakes to watch for.

5 rakhis × 4 beads5 × 4 = 20

NCERT Class 3 Maths Chapter 7 Raksha Bandhan: what it teaches

Making rakhis needs 1 flower, 2 threads and 4 beads each. For 5 rakhis, that is 5 × 1, 5 × 2 and 5 × 4. Your child builds tables, multiplies by 10 and 5, and turns it round: 30 beads make how many rakhis? That is division.

Why it matters later. Multiplication and division facts here are used for the rest of primary school, from area to fractions.

See it: this chapter in pictures

2 + 2 + 2 + 24 × 2 = 8
Repeated addition written as multiplication.
20 ÷ 4 = 5 groups
Division: how many groups of 4 in 20?
40 × 5= 4 tens × 5= 20 tens= 200
Big multiplications are easy in tens.

You need

  • beads, buttons or beans
  • thread
  • small boxes or katoris
  • paper to write tables

Tonight’s 10 minutes

  1. Make pretend rakhis: each needs 2 threads and 4 beads. How many for 3 rakhis? For 5?
  2. Write it three ways: 4 + 4 + 4, 3 times 4, 3 × 4 = 12.
  3. Share 20 beads into groups of 4. How many groups? That is 20 ÷ 4 = 5.
  4. Try big easy ones: 10 × 5, 20 × 5, 40 × 5, by thinking in tens.

Words to use

  • times
  • ×
  • groups of
  • table
  • share
  • ÷
  • each

Watch for

  • Adding instead of multiplying: 5 × 4 = 9. Build 5 groups of 4 beads and count. Say “5 groups of 4”.
  • Thinking division is a new, separate thing. Show that 20 ÷ 4 asks “how many 4s make 20?”, the times table read backwards.

What it sounds like at home

A short example of the conversation. Your words will differ; the questions are what matter.

YouEach rakhi needs 4 beads. How many for 5?

Your child4, 8, 12, 16, 20.

YouSay it with times.

Your child5 times 4 is 20.

You30 beads, 3 per rakhi. How many rakhis?

Your child10.

A game for this week: Rakhi shop

  1. Price each rakhi part: 1 flower, 2 threads, 4 beads.
  2. Take an order: “6 rakhis please.”
  3. Your child works out flowers, threads and beads needed.
  4. Swap: give materials and ask how many rakhis can be made.

A 5-day plan, 10 minutes a day

  1. Day 1Rakhi materials for 3 and 5 rakhis.
  2. Day 2Write repeated addition as ×.
  3. Day 3Share beads into groups (÷).
  4. Day 4Times 10 and times 5.
  5. Day 5Rakhi shop game.

Everyday moments to practise

  • Wheels on autos in a parking.
  • Packets of 5 biscuits.
  • Sharing sweets among cousins.
  • Chairs in rows at a function.

Quick check

Ask these at the end of the week. Tap to see the answer.

5 × 4?

20.

How many rakhis from 30 beads if each needs 3?

10.

A spider has 8 legs. How many legs do 3 spiders have?

24.

Ready for the next chapter when your child…

  • Writes and solves multiplication stories.
  • Shares into equal groups and writes ÷.
  • Knows tables of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10.

Activities, wording and illustrations are Mathify Kids’ own, following the topics of NCERT’s Maths Mela (Class 3). See the full Class 3 parent guide for every chapter.

Questions parents ask

Is division taught in Class 3?

Yes, as equal grouping and sharing, linked to multiplication.

Which tables should my child know?

The book builds 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 and uses tens for bigger numbers.

How do I multiply 40 × 5 simply?

Think 4 tens × 5 = 20 tens = 200.
