Long division: a worked example (852 ÷ 4)
- 8 ÷ 4 = 2. Write 2 above the 8. 2 × 4 = 8, and 8 − 8 = 0.
- Bring down 5. 5 ÷ 4 = 1 r 1. Write 1. Bring down 2 to make 12.
- 12 ÷ 4 = 3. Write 3. The answer is 213.
How to use it at home and in class
At home
Teach the steps as a short chant: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down. Ten problems a day works better than a whole sheet at once. Mark them together with the answer key, then ask your child to explain one they got wrong: finding the mistake themselves is where the learning happens.
In class
Use the first row as a warm-up, a full page for independent practice, or five questions as an exit ticket. For a retake or a second group, make a new version with the test maker so every child gets different numbers.
Mistakes to watch for
- Forgetting to write a 0 in the answer when a digit can’t be divided.
- Bringing down two digits at once.
What to practice before and after long division
- Before: division with remainders. If this sheet is a struggle, go back a step.
