Division with remainders: a worked example (29 ÷ 4)
- Find the biggest 4 times table fact not over 29: 4 × 7 = 28.
- Subtract: 29 − 28 = 1.
- So 29 ÷ 4 = 7 remainder 1, written 7 r 1.
How to use it at home and in class
At home
Check every answer: 4 × 7 + 1 should equal 29. Ten problems a day works better than a whole sheet at once. Mark them together with the answer key, then ask your child to explain one they got wrong: finding the mistake themselves is where the learning happens.
In class
Use the first row as a warm-up, a full page for independent practice, or five questions as an exit ticket. For a retake or a second group, make a new version with the test maker so every child gets different numbers.
Mistakes to watch for
- A remainder that is bigger than the divisor, which means one more group fits.
- Using a times table fact that goes over the number.
What to practice before and after division with remainders
- Before: division facts. If this sheet is a struggle, go back a step.
- After: long division, once this one is mostly right.
- Learn it first: the division with remainders lesson and the division chart.
