Least common multiple: a worked example (LCM of 6 and 8)
- Multiples of 6: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30 …
- Multiples of 8: 8, 16, 24, 32 …
- The first number in both lists is 24.
How to use it at home and in class
At home
List multiples of the bigger number first and check each one against the smaller number. Ten problems a day works better than a whole sheet at once. Mark them together with the answer key, then ask your child to explain one they got wrong: finding the mistake themselves is where the learning happens.
In class
Use the first row as a warm-up, a full page for independent practice, or five questions as an exit ticket. For a retake or a second group, make a new version with the test maker so every child gets different numbers.
Mistakes to watch for
- Multiplying the two numbers every time (6 × 8 = 48), which is common but not always least.
- Confusing LCM with GCF.
What to practice before and after least common multiple
- Before: greatest common factor. If this sheet is a struggle, go back a step.
- Learn it first: the least common multiple lesson and the factors and multiples chart.
