Make a new version

Adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators: a worked example (3/8 + 4/8 and 5/6 − 1/6)

  1. 3/8 + 4/8: add the tops, 3 + 4 = 7. The answer is 7/8.
  2. 5/6 − 1/6: subtract the tops, 5 − 1 = 4, giving 4/6.
  3. Simplify: 4/6 = 2/3.

How to use it at home and in class

At home

Say the fractions as words: “3 eighths plus 4 eighths is 7 eighths.” The denominator is the name, and names don’t add. Ten problems a day works better than a whole sheet at once. Mark them together with the answer key, then ask your child to explain one they got wrong: finding the mistake themselves is where the learning happens.

In class

Use the first row as a warm-up, a full page for independent practice, or five questions as an exit ticket. For a retake or a second group, make a new version with the test maker so every child gets different numbers.
