Comparing fractions: a worked example (3/4 ○ 5/8)
- Make the denominators the same: 3/4 = 6/8.
- Compare 6/8 and 5/8: 6 eighths is more than 5 eighths.
- So 3/4 > 5/8.
How to use it at home and in class
At home
For unit fractions, remind your child: more pieces means smaller pieces. Ten problems a day works better than a whole sheet at once. Mark them together with the answer key, then ask your child to explain one they got wrong: finding the mistake themselves is where the learning happens.
In class
Use the first row as a warm-up, a full page for independent practice, or five questions as an exit ticket. For a retake or a second group, make a new version with the test maker so every child gets different numbers.
Mistakes to watch for
- Thinking a bigger denominator means a bigger fraction, so 1/8 > 1/4.
- Comparing only the top numbers when the bottoms are different.
What to practice before and after comparing fractions
- Before: simplifying fractions. If this sheet is a struggle, go back a step.
- After: adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators, once this one is mostly right.
- Learn it first: the comparing fractions lesson and the fractions chart.
