Volume of rectangular prisms: a worked example (A box 5 units long, 3 units wide and 4 units high)
- Volume = length × width × height.
- 5 × 3 = 15 cubes in one layer.
- 15 × 4 layers = 60 cubic units.
How to use it at home and in class
At home
Build a small box from cubes or sugar cubes and count them. Ten problems a day works better than a whole sheet at once. Mark them together with the answer key, then ask your child to explain one they got wrong: finding the mistake themselves is where the learning happens.
In class
Use the first row as a warm-up, a full page for independent practice, or five questions as an exit ticket. For a retake or a second group, make a new version with the test maker so every child gets different numbers.
Mistakes to watch for
- Adding the three measurements.
- Writing square units instead of cubic units.
What to practice before and after volume of rectangular prisms
- Before: area of triangles. If this sheet is a struggle, go back a step.
- After: coordinate plane, once this one is mostly right.
- Learn it first: the volume of rectangular prisms lesson and the 3d shapes chart.
