NCERT Ganita Manjari, Class 9, textbook pages 1–15 (Part I)
How to help your child with Class 9 Maths Chapter 1, Orienting Yourself: The Use of Coordinates, at home
Coordinate plane, plotting points and distance, explained for parents: a 30-minute study session, a quick challenge, a 5-day plan and the mistakes to watch for.
NCERT Class 9 Maths Chapter 1 Orienting Yourself: The Use of Coordinates: what it teaches
Your teen learns to locate any point with two numbers (x, y) on the coordinate plane, plots points in all four quadrants, and uses coordinates to describe positions, maps and simple shapes.
Why it matters later. Coordinates are the base of linear graphs, coordinate geometry in Class 10 and functions later.

You need
- graph paper
- a ruler
- a city map or seating chart
Tonight’s 30 minutes
- Label a seating chart or chessboard with coordinates and find seats by (x, y).
- Plot A(2, 3), B(−3, 1), C(−2, −4), D(4, −2). Name the quadrant of each.
- Plot the corners of a rectangle and find its missing fourth corner.
- Find the distance between (1, 1) and (4, 5) by drawing a right triangle (5 units).
Words to use
- coordinates
- x-axis
- y-axis
- origin
- quadrant
- ordered pair
Watch for
- Swapping x and y. x comes first: along the corridor, then up the stairs.
- Wrong signs in quadrants. Quadrant II is (−, +); sketch the signs on the axes.
What it sounds like at home
A short example of the conversation. Your words will differ; the questions are what matter.
YouWhere is (−3, 1)?
Your childLeft 3, up 1: second quadrant.
A game for this week: Battleship on a grid
- Each player hides 3 ships on a −5 to 5 grid.
- Take turns calling coordinates.
- Hit or miss is announced.
- First to sink all ships wins.
A 5-day plan, 30 minutes a day
- Day 1Seating-chart coordinates.
- Day 2Four quadrants.
- Day 3Missing vertex.
- Day 4Distance with a right triangle.
- Day 5Battleship game.
Everyday moments to practise
- Maps and GPS.
- Seat numbers in cinemas.
- Chess notation.
- Game design.
Quick check
Ask these at the end of the week. Tap to see the answer.
Quadrant of (−3, 1)?
II.
Point on the y-axis has x = ?
0.
Distance from (1, 1) to (4, 5)?
5.
Ready for the next chapter when your child…
- Plots points in all quadrants.
- Reads coordinates accurately.
- Uses coordinates for shapes and distances.
Activities, wording and illustrations are Mathify Kids’ own, following the topics of NCERT’s Ganita Manjari (Class 9). See the full Class 9 parent guide for every chapter.
Questions parents ask
What is the origin?
The point (0, 0) where the axes meet.
Why is order important in (x, y)?
(2, 3) and (3, 2) are different points.
Is the distance formula in Class 9?
The idea via right triangles appears; the full formula is in Class 10.
