NCERT Class 10 Maths Chapter 13 Statistics: what it teaches

Your teen finds the mean (direct and assumed-mean methods), median and mode of grouped data, and interprets what each says about real data such as marks or incomes.

Why it matters later. Statistics continues in Class 11 (variance and standard deviation).

class 10–20class mark = 15mean uses class marks
Midpoints represent intervals.
median class:where cf reaches n/2then use the formula
Cumulative frequency locates the median.
3 Median = Mode + 2 Meanempirical relationa useful check
Checks results roughly.

You need

  • a table of grouped data
  • a calculator

Tonight’s 45 minutes

  1. Collect marks of 30 students in class intervals.
  2. Find the mean using class marks (midpoints).
  3. Find the median using cumulative frequency.
  4. Find the modal class and mode with the formula.

Words to use

  • class mark
  • frequency
  • mean
  • median
  • mode
  • cumulative frequency

Watch for

  • Using class limits instead of class marks for the mean. Use the midpoint of each interval.
  • Wrong median class. Find n/2 in the cumulative frequency column.

What it sounds like at home

A short example of the conversation. Your words will differ; the questions are what matter.

YouMean of grouped data: which x?

Your childThe class mark, the midpoint.

A game for this week: Data story

  1. Collect grouped data (screen time, heights).
  2. Find mean, median and mode.
  3. Explain what each shows.
  4. Present to family.

A 5-day plan, 45 minutes a day

  1. Day 1Explain-back.
  2. Day 2Worked examples.
  3. Day 3Practice set.
  4. Day 4Real-life problem.
  5. Day 5Mixed quiz.

Everyday moments to practise

  • Exam result analysis.
  • Income surveys.
  • Sports statistics.
  • Health data.

Quick check

Ask these at the end of the week. Tap to see the answer.

Class mark of 10–20?

15.

Median class uses which value?

n/2 in cumulative frequency.

Empirical relation?

3 Median = Mode + 2 Mean.

Ready for the next chapter when your child…

  • Finds mean of grouped data.
  • Finds median and mode.
  • Interprets results.

Activities, wording and illustrations are Mathify Kids’ own, following the topics of NCERT’s Mathematics (Class 10). See the full Class 10 parent guide for every chapter.

Questions parents ask

What is a class mark?

The midpoint of a class interval.

When is median better than mean?

When there are extreme values.

What is the empirical relationship?

3 Median = Mode + 2 Mean (approximately).
