Mixed times tables: a worked example (6 × 9)
- Use the ten trick: 6 × 10 = 60.
- Take away one group of 6: 60 − 6 = 54.
- So 6 × 9 = 54.
How to use it at home and in class
At home
Only move to mixed tables once your child knows each table on its own. Ten problems a day works better than a whole sheet at once. Mark them together with the answer key, then ask your child to explain one they got wrong: finding the mistake themselves is where the learning happens.
In class
Use the first row as a warm-up, a full page for independent practice, or five questions as an exit ticket. For a retake or a second group, make a new version with the test maker so every child gets different numbers.
Mistakes to watch for
- Skip counting along one table to find each answer, which is slow.
- Reversing digits, like writing 45 for 6 × 9.
What to practice before and after mixed times tables
- Before: multiplication facts. If this sheet is a struggle, go back a step.
- After: 2 times table, once this one is mostly right.
- Learn it first: the mixed times tables lesson and the multiplication chart.
